ASANTE AKIM SOUTH EMPOWERS PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES THROUGH VOCATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING

In a dedicated effort to promote economic independence and enhance sustainable livelihoods, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Asante Akim South Municipal Assembly has organized a comprehensive skills training workshop for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the municipality. The empowerment program took place on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Assembly Hall in Juaso. The training initiative was specifically designed to equip participants with practical, demand-driven vocational skills that require minimal start-up capital but offer high returns in the local market. Experienced facilitators led hands-on sessions in various artisanal setups, including the commercial production of liquid soap, detergents, disinfectants, and pastry making. Beyond technical manufacturing skills, the beneficiaries received essential entrepreneurial training covering basic bookkeeping, product branding, packaging, and effective marketing strategies. Officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development emphasized that the training forms a core part of the Assembly's broader strategy to shift from mere financial handouts to sustainable capacity building. By equipping PWDs with profitable trades, the department aims to eliminate urban poverty, reduce dependency on family members, and foster self-reliance. Management noted that empowering PWDs economically is vital for achieving inclusive local economic development. The beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation to the Assembly and the Social Welfare Department for the opportunity, noting that the practical skills acquired would enable them to establish viable home-based businesses. The Asante Akim South Municipal Assembly assured participants that follow-up assessments would be conducted regularly to provide technical support and ensure the long-term success of their newly established enterprises.
