The Ghana School Feeding Programme Secretariat organized a comprehensive nutrition sensitization workshop for all caterers operating under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP). In the Asante Akim South Municipality, the management of the Assembly, led directly by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah, joined the municipal Desk Officer for the School Feeding Programme to open the capacity-building event. The workshop brought together hundreds of local caterers from various public basic schools across the municipality. The primary goal of the training initiative was to upgrade the cooking skills of the operators, educate them on the preparation of well-balanced diets using locally sourced ingredients, and reinforce strict food safety and hygiene guidelines within school kitchens. Addressing the participants, the Municipal Chief Executive emphasized that the school feeding initiative is not merely a social intervention to increase school enrollment, but a critical health program designed to combat childhood malnutrition. Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah stated that her administration will maintain strict oversight of the program to guarantee that meals served to pupils are both highly nutritious and prepared under pristine sanitary conditions. The MCE urged the caterers to adhere strictly to the approved menu charts and portion sizes set by the national secretariat. The municipal School Feeding Desk Officer led technical sessions detailing financial management, proper storage of foodstuffs to prevent spoilage, and standard health protocols for food handlers. Management noted that continuous sensitization ensures that public funds are utilized efficiently to deliver quality meals that support the physical and cognitive development of the pupils. The caterers expressed appreciation to the Assembly and the government for the continuous training, noting that the session provided valuable insights into creating cost-effective, high-nutrition meal options. The Assembly concluded the session by reaffirming its commitment to conducting unannounced monitoring visits to school kitchens to check compliance with the newly introduced standards.
